Apparently Toyota spent over $400,000,000 developing the 1UZ-FE.
I mean, damn.

The 1UZ-FE is the greatest engine ever made and then the 1UZ-FE became the 2UZ-FE(4.7L) which ia also a fantastic engine. Its smooth(unbelievably smooth), powerful(low end V8 heavenly torque), and quiet as get out but can still be enjoyed because lord the sound is good.

So, I wanted to see how this claimed number compares to some other numbers. For instance, in 1988 (year before 1UZ-FE launched), Toyota as a whole made 10,163 million yen. That converts to around $82 million 1988 USD. In 2016 USD, that’s $164 million. I kinda worry that the estimate suggests that Toyota spent more than 2 years of total company revenues on development of a single engine. Happy to be wrong, though. Also, this is a cheap excuse to share charts!

(1988 USD-JPY Currency exchange and 1988-2016 USD inflation conversion stuff comes from Fed Reserve.)

Is that in 2016 dollars, or 1989 dolllars?

Well the engine had many applications, so that would stillmake sense.

I purposely have left my exhaust stock because I drove long distances a lot and nothing is worse then a droooooooooooooooone, but when you dump the right foot, all you hear is a non deafening amazing engine sound. The gas mileage is not great though when right foot gets dumped often/stays planted while driving.

Well, two things. First: I am a moron and am off by 1000 in my first post. (10,000 billion, not 10,000 million. Derp.) So, net revenues are $164 billion. That seems more reasonable. Second: I found R&D numbers back to 1998. (See below.) In 1998, big T spent 444 billion yen, or around 3.08 billion 1998 USD. Today, that’s about $4.5 billion. So, yea, $400 million seems reasonable. Apologies.
TL;DR: Doc is tired, fucked the math the first time, found more numbers, HondaBro’s story checks out.
